TC - Where are you from? Tanya - Originally from Brooklyn New York currently reside in Israel
TC - Why did you go natural?
Tanya - Well, I had been talking with Joanne Burgess about it a bit, and my husband and another friend at the time both kept encouraging me to do it. I had micro braids in, and during that time I became pregnant with my second child. Taking down the micros was a nightmare that took entirely too long, and when I was finally done, I decided to go natural, as I had tons of new growth on my head, lol. I tried to transition, but that didn't last too long. I couldn't handle the two textures, and there was no youtube for me to go to find helpful tips, so I just cut off all of the relaxed ends, which was a HUGE shock for me, as I'd always had shoulder to armpit length hair with my relaxer. But I started out with twists and then moved on to the puff. My last relaxer was in March 2005.
TC - What hair mistakes have you learned from?
Tanya - Wearing it out in a puff for about the first 3 1/2 years of my natural journey. I rarely ever detangled, and never moisturized after a wash (and I only co-washed back then). The combination of bad hair practices really did a number on my ends, and I've had to nurture it back to health.
TC - What is your best hair advice? Tanya - Give yourself time to learn your hair, what it likes, doesn't like, what YOU have time to do and don't have time to do. You will master it, but it takes time, trial and error.TC - What is the strangest comment, request or hair story?

TC - Describe your hair? Tanya - 2 textures: the back has fine strands, average density, and is very tightly coiled (like teeny tiny pen springs). Happily nappy.
The top and front have thicker strands with slightly looser coils (slightly) they're bigger than pen springs, but not as big as pencils by any stretch of the imagination.(So I'm not sure, but either 4b and 4c, or 4a and 4b. There are alot of different interpretations of the types, so I just settle with saying that it's kinky and coily).
The density is average in this area too. Not thick or thin as far as coverage over my head.
TC - Who is your favorite natural celebrity?
Tanya - Wow, this is tough! Can I name a few? I really enjoy Laila-Jean (fusionofcultures on yt) for her styles and skills, Kimmaytube for her knowledge and tenacity, Dawnyele for her knowledge of working with 4c hair, and Sera2544, because she was able, with diligence, to grow her hair to hip-bone length.
TC - What do you like most about your hair? Tanya - I really enjoy how versatile and vibrant it is! I love how it expands, and how healthy it is. And finally, I like how it feels. It's soft and supple.
TC - Where do you buy your products?
Tanya - Since I'm in Israel, I have a mixture of local products, which I buy at the pharmacy or healthfood store, and I have people bring things for me when they go to the States.
TC - How did you join the Thirsty Curlz online hair community?
Tanya - Joanne Burgess, my hair-spiration added me to the Thirsty Curlz Facebook Group.
I enjoy all of the helpful input, tips, fun conversation, and hearing the stories, trial, woes, and victories of women who are at some stage on the same journey!
